I am a Director of the AI Labs of Bytedance Inc, a global information distribution platform that connects people and information. Before that I was a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Redmond. I spent several years as a Principal Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft Azure before I moved back to MSR. I was a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia before I joined Microsoft Azure.

My areas of interest include networked systems at large-scale, data center networking (DCN), cloud computing, systems availability and troubleshooting.

I am among the first to start data center networking research. I have won several best paper awards for my research in data center networking. I have won several MSR technology transfer awards and the MSR Redmond Labs Exemplary Collaboration Award 2017 for my technology transfers. Several of my envisions including DCN virtualization, DCN monitoring, and ServerSwitch generated both academic and industrial impacts. Many of the systems that I have designed and implemented, including CloudBrain, RDMA/RoCEv2, Pingmesh, NetBouncer, DiffServ for data centers, are widely deployed in Microsoft production data centers, are running in millions of servers in data centers, and are indispensable infrastructure services and technologies for both Azure and Bing.

I am currently working on large scale infrastructure for AI and cloud computing.
